When

  • Site of a small camp after the Roman invasion of AD 43.
  • Evidence of settlements to the north and west of the fort dating from the second and third centuries.
  • Fort dates to the early third century AD, earlier than most Saxon Shore forts, it had a similar design and date as the fort at Brancaster in Norfolk overlooking the Wash.
  • Continued as a fortification until the late forth century.
  • Cohors 1 Baestasiorum were stationed here and possibly built the fort.
  • Early medieval church was built here in AD 669, using a lot of the Roman fort bricks and stones.

What Remains

  • Some low sections of wall.
  • Large shell of medieval church with high towers.
